Passionate Woodworker Creates Stunning Accoya Wooden Sinks

After coming to Canada 28 years ago with his wife and son, Janusz “Jimmy” Dzida always dreamed of following his true passion – woodworking. Unfulfilled in his job as a truck driver, he longed to design and create beautiful wooden pieces of art. Eventually when his son started his own family, Janusz and his wife moved to the quaint countryside of Mono, Ontario where his dream became a reality.

Today, Janusz runs his own woodworking shop called Wood Simplicity, a place where every piece of wood tells a story. From beautiful coffee tables to elegant live edge tables, to exquisite barn doors and cheese boards, Janusz transforms each wooden creation into conversation starters and centerpieces for family and friends to enjoy in their homes.

One of his most recent creations has been custom, one-of-a-kind wooden sinks made from Accoya, prompted by a renovation in his own household washroom where his desire was to showcase something unique with an heirloom quality.

“At first, I was looking to purchase a small sink and went to a couple home shows to find one, but I was limited to a selection of stainless steel, marble, porcelain and ceramic sink options which were more than I was willing to spend” says Janusz. “I also wanted to add warmth and liveliness to my washroom, and none of these options provided me with that. It was then that I began thinking about creating my own sink using wood.”

A sink made of wood is something you don’t typically come across, let alone think about when you’re renovating your washroom. But, hearing from his friends who work in the construction industry in Germany about the wonders of Accoya wood, convinced Janusz it was the wood to use for his sink project.

“Accoya wood is widely used all over Europe due to its moisture resistant properties, durability, and warranty. My construction buddies rave about it in Germany” explains Janusz. “I just can’t believe the warranty on it and the fact that it’s so beautiful, and its wood.”

Accoya is the world’s leading high-performance wood, used in some of the most extreme climates and applications. It is manufactured using Accsys Technologies’ proprietary acetylation process to create the nontoxic high-performance wood product. The modification process chemically alters the wood’s free hydroxyls into stable acetyl groups. Acetyl groups are naturally present in all wood species, which means that nothing toxic is added. The altered cell structure of the wood makes it an unrecognizable food source for insects and prevents fungal decay. It boasts a 50-year above ground and 25-year below ground warranty and swelling and shrinkage are reduced by 75 percent or more.

With a couple of sinks already in the works, Jimmy couldn’t be in more awe of this high-performance wood product. No matter what shape the sink is designed in and how many coats of varnish is placed on the project, the wood is living up to its expectations. And, while creating wooden sinks may be his first project using Accoya wood, it certainly won’t be his last.
